How Best Free URL Shortener is assessed

The exact criteria behind every entry on this site, so you can disagree with the weighting rather than wonder what it was.

Meaning of "best" and "top"

These words describe the editorial recommendation for the stated use case, decided by the criteria below. They are not a claim of a universal, independently measured league table, and no tool was lab-tested for this site.

What we measure

Only free-plan fields decide the recommendation on this site. For each tool we record, from its public pricing page and in this priority:

  1. Free link quota, and whether it counts active links, a monthly allowance or a lifetime total.
  2. Custom domain on free, including how many and whether SSL is automatic.
  3. Ads or interstitials shown to people who click free links.
  4. Analytics on free: days of history, breakdowns available, and whether bot clicks are filtered.
  5. Tracked-click caps, and whether reaching them pauses links.
  6. QR codes and bio pages on free, and whether they are watermarked.
  7. The first paid step: price, billing cadence and whether it includes a custom domain, used only as context.

How the recommendation is chosen

The site-wide recommendation is the free plan that scores best on the first four criteria together. ReSlug does, with 500 active links, one custom domain, no ads and 30 days of filtered analytics. Where another tool wins a single criterion it is named on that entry: Short.io for domain count, Dub for a free API, TinyURL for unlimited untracked links.

What we deliberately ignore

Update cadence

Pricing pages are re-checked at least monthly and whenever a vendor announces a plan change. The current dataset was reviewed on 8 November 2026 and covers 10 tools.
